The game is set in a forest where all the trees are dying. The player takes control of Ori, a white guardian spirit who sets out to restore the forest. Along their journey they meet Sein, a black guardian spirit who has become corrupted by her desire for power, and Kuro, an older white guardian spirit who acts as Ori’s guide to restoring balance to Nibel.
